New vision for Grant Park
Museum, sculptures, dog park among plans for city's `front yard'

By Noreen S. Ahmed-Ullah

...The city's "front yard" also will become a new testing ground for skateboarders. An artist whose sculptures elsewhere in the city have become targets for skateboarders has been commissioned to create a skate park to lure boarders away from downtown plazas...

1/28/06 -For those who are emailing the site, I'm having trouble getting return emails through to some of you. I'm working on it- just wanted to let you know.

1/27/06 -Found some photos of some Chicago spots that were getting shut down. Meant to get them up sooner but they kind of got lost in the shuffle. Anyway...

Art Institute 2003

1/19/06 -New year, new plans. Some changes to this site will be underway soon. Super thanks to all the guys who've ridden in the name of Death-Grip over the last 5 years, I'll always be grateful.

The midwest is blessed with this new park : http://www.creamcityskatepark.com/

10/14/05 - For anyone out there who wonders: What's up with there being no news posts since August?

Well, I've moved to the Pacific Northwest and have been busy with getting the Burton Street Course Skatepark in fighting shape. Running a skatepark gives me a whole new perspective that has me thinking twice about some of the park reviews I've done in the past. Getting out of Racine, Wi and away from the drive by shootings and useless harassment of law enforcement has been doing wonders for my disposition as well. I don't want to get too gushy here but the change is definitely working well so far...

8/17/05 - Shred Shop's new store in Skokie has an outdoor mini, free to skate. Helmet and signed waiver required.

R.I.P.

Oakland California's DIY Ramps in jeopardy. Here's a news story with video about it. There park is the kind that could get built at Logan Square in Chicago. Imagine a covered *free* skatepark! Step in and help see it through, maybe it won't end up in conflict like it has in the Bay area.

email brief support statement for "SKATEPARK under Kennedy Expressway in Logan Square" to:

7/25/05 - Thanks to those who came out for Racine's first-ever skate camp. I had fun and I hope you did too. Dane's been a busy boy but came down and helped out with the camp. He's also started a 'zine titled "Sproink" which you'll hopefully be able to find. The best way to find out how is to email him @ jacked_cactus@hotmail.com

Check out some of Sproink here.

7/15/05 - Flyer for Skate Camp:

7/14/05 - Story about Wednesday's Logan Square skatepark meeting here. Good job to those who were there in support!

In local news: I'll be teaching a skate-camp next week at Racine's outdoor park. Intended for beginners it runs Tue., Wed., & Thurs. from 9-11. Contact Park and Rec. at 636-9568 for sign-up info.

7/11/05 - Important meeting Wednesday:

Support covered SKATEPARK in Logan Square under Kennedy Expressway overpass Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners Meeting July 13 (Wednesday) starts promptly at 4 PM!
Main presenters from our group have to be there by 4:00 on July 13. For
others, even coming late at 4:30 and possibly later still works.
541 N. Fairbanks Court, 8th Floor Boardroom (Park District Headquarters) east of Michigan Ave at Grand (Grand Red Line station about 6 blocks walk)

get lots of Skatepark supporters to come. This meeting is NOT just about Skatepark. Public comment session allows us (anyone) to speak to Board of Commissioners. We are going to spaeak about the Skatepark. CPD limits comments to about 2 minutes per person. Since we will be group of more than 10 (hopefully lots more if you get folks to turn out) CPD will allow our lead spokespeople a "Powerpoint" presentation of slides on Burnside and FDR representing group.
Count on at least 5 minutes for this overview presentation; we will have to be assertive for more time but still possible if 20 or more of us turn out!

Tell EVERYONE to come. Get word out to skaters with these details.
Everyone- Fill out CPD Testimony COMMENT CARD provided at entrance table outside Boardroom.
For consistency; topic you support is:
SKATEPARK under Kennedy Expressway in Logan Square

Also, tell everyone to try and bring a written support letter for Chicago's first covered Skatepark opportunity, even if just a few sentences.
Address to:
Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners Timothy Mitchell, Superintendent and Parks CEO

This is submitted to the Board Secretary. Anyone who is really motivated to make brief comments at microphone to Board in support of this great Skatepark opportunity can do so. You have to check off box for "Oral Testimony" on the comment card you fill out and hand in to CPD staff.

That's how CPD meeting format works. use the system to present our voice and it works. It's THEIR headquarters, their meeting, their rules. Fuck with them or present extreme attitude and you'll be tossed and hurt everything. Help CPD understand covered SKatepark will be great for everyone. Help CPD understand that you know best how to design, plan, and even help build it. Help CPD understand skaters can fundraise and make this a great park.

Anyone who can't come in person: email brief support statement for "SKATEPARK under Kennedy Expressway in Logan Square" to:
Maria Saldana <OfficeofSecretary@chicagoparkdistrict.com>
Timothy.Mitchell@chicagoparkdistrict.com
Judy Martinez <Judy.Martinez@chicagoparkdistrict.com>

7/04/05 - Happy Independence day!

6/29/05 - Nike apologizes!

Updated news on the Brooklyn Banks, NYC.

6/27/05 - Check out a story on Nike's new summer tour promotianal poster "art". Look familiar? Transworld business just had an article with some guys frorm the SB division of Nike talking about how they've gained skater's trust, and understand how to appeal to the skateboard market. With limited edition dunks going for hundreds of dollars they're obviously right, but here's one skater that says screw off! Don't pretend you're down with skaters for any reason other than your quest for total domination of the entire athletic footwear market.

They've been rejected before- ("what if all athletes were treated like skaters" ad campaign from the 90's & Savier- a "seperate" company that shared the manufacturing and Research and Development facilitites of Nike but cleverly tried to appear distanced from them.)

It's time to reject them again!*

6/22/05 - Thanks to all of you who came to West Park for the informal Go Skateboarding Day skatejam. Low key, DIY, and a good start to the summer!

Spring is finally springing in the midwest!

5/03/05 - Big surprise but the Lake Bluff Skatepark "repair" construction is still underway. The signs originally indicated re-opening May 1st, but so far all they've done is tear out the box w/hubbas in the middle and left a big mess behind. Good luck to the locals on that one.

4/24/05 - Good news out of Kenosha: the City and BASIK have pledged to get a new skatepark built there in 2006.

More at: http://www.basik.info

04/18/05 - 4/21/05(update) - There's an updated story about the Grant Park skatepark plans that was recently run in the Tribune. I noticed they toned down the language on the crackdown aspect of their two-part plan. From "...the district and Chicago police are launching a double-pronged attack" that ran in a story last December to: "...officials want to test that claim with a two-part strategy..."

Original story here. Updated story here.

04/14/05 - More pictures of Vancouver's authentic street park can be seen here.

04/04/05 - Good news for Kenosha: The city and BASIK have signed an agreement that will help get their skatepark design rolling. Initial talks have it leaning towards a street plaza with a sprinkling of transition throughout.

03/30/05 - Lake Bluff's skatepark is undergoing long overdue repairs.

Opens again May 1st.

03/17/05 - I've never really understood what people celebrate on this day. Around Chicago it seems to mostly be about drinking, but it does keep the green dye industry in business.

So... Happy St. Patricks Day!

02/09/05 -El Paso, Texas review up now.

02/08/05 -Vashon Island, Wa skatepark review up.

02/03/05 -Skated Krush last night... fun park, go skate it soon!

Full review now up.

02/01/05 - Krush opened today at 2 P.M. I hope to get down there this week and get some shots of the park for the site...

This seems like something that should have come frome Wisconsin.

01/27/05 - No news for awhile-

winter in the midwest ughhh.

Krush should be open soon, maybe?

01/07/05 - Some encouraging news about the Brooklyn Banks:

http://www.downtownexpress.com/de_85/citytriestokeep.html

...but don't sleep on it, see what the owner of 5boro says about other projects that he's worked on with park districts and how they've screwed them up. Thank god someone's at least trying to represent for skaters...

12/11/04 - The final verdict is still out on the renovation/demolition of the Brooklyn banks. Read the thread on this forum, see the pictures here and see what you think. It seems to me that no matter what the City's plan for this area, this spot will be forever changed...

September2004

and NOW..

R.I.P. Brooklyn Banks

12/08/04 - Found an old video clip of our 2001/2002 Promo. It's a 5.96MB wmv file, click here to see it.

12/08/04 - I realized that some of you won't be able to link to the news story below without signing up with the Tribune. Well, news agencies that require you to give them personal information to view thier "free" site piss me off. So here's what you can do, at the login prompt type in:

Member name: death-grip
Password: death-grip

(thanks to SkateNerd for leading the way on this technique!)

Also check out the Krush site for updated photos of the skatepark construction. It's starting to take shape...

11/29/04 - Here's a link to some skate news out of Chicago. Sounds like they're planning on yet again half-assing a spot for area skaters while using it as an opportunity to restrict skating everywhere else. I mean, c'mon:

"So the district and Chicago police are launching a double-pronged attack: Give skateboarders a specially designed area to use and, if warnings go unheeded, cite those who break city ordinance by skateboarding in the park."

"Police can issue citations that carry fines from $25 to $200 to skateboarders 17 or older. Younger skateboarders who don't heed warnings can be brought to the police station, where they would face a verbal warning or juvenile charges, Byrne said."

Imagine any other activity whose needs were legitimately recognized by it's community and park district, falling under these double-edged guidelines. Parents of children participating in any other sport would never tolerate these double-standards on their kids.

THANKS FOR SUPPORTING YOUR LOCAL YOUTH, CHICAGO !

11/22/04 - Krush is a new skatepark being built in the SouthWest suburbs of Chi-Town. Check their website for construction progress. I'm eager to see it come together!

11/12/04 - New Elmhurst review up. Click here.

11/08/04 - Here's a link to the new skate plaza in Vancouver. I'm going to be writing a little about it soon but first I have to wade through a churning sea of emotions I feel when seeing this place. From extreme jealousy to complete bafflement on our country's take on the same issue, it's a difficult topic for me to navigate objectively.

10/27/04 - Contest Sunday the 31st @ Captain Ron's skatepark in Racine. Flyer here.

10/22/04 - Skate Daily recently posted a complaint about Modular skate parks and questioned the involvement of Andy Macdonald with Skate Wave. Well, he replied saying he hasn't had any involvement with that company for more than a year. I've just got one question:

Anyone remember this?

10/20/04 - Winnetka park here.

10/12/04 - Palatine park review now up. It's so random what I get done... Here's a review for a park I stumbled upon accidentally and yet there are all kinds of pics and info I've said I'd put up for months still floating around my computer.

Whatever.

10/05/04 - Thanks to all the skaters who stopped by this weekend. Of course- a special thanks to all those down with Death-Grip (families too) who helped out!

10/01/04 - Party on the Pavement, Racine's downtown block party/Octoberfest is tomorrow. Sixth St. and Main St. will be blocked off to vehicles and there will be food, music, and activities from 12-6 p.m. We'll be at the intersection of 6th and College with ramps, rails, and boxes so bring your board and skate a little with us.

The skate set-up is a mellow time, usually locals just goofin' and having fun. To me, the coolest part is that it's one of the only times we get to be seen by the general public in the public. The downtown area is normally off-limits to skateboarders, bringing a $69.00 fine to any who are caught in violation. However, during the event, we get almost an entire city block to set-up our stuff with the full sanctioning of the authorities. It certainly is a nice change of pace, if only for an afternoon.

Skaters being included in the festival may be one small step but it's an important one.

9/15/04 -Vancouver's new street plaza is now open! Here's a link to a news story about it.

9/15/04 -Dane made it in the local paper in an article about the West Park Party last Saturday. Photo and caption will be up soon.

8/27/04 -Thanks to Nick @ the Vashon Island Skatepark for the hook-up! Pics of the park up soon...
