Here is a note from Mark Heller the Logan Square parks
advocate that got the ball rolling o this bad boy.
The Logan Square SKATEPARK site is UNDER I-90/94 Kennedy
Expressway overpass
at 2400-2500 W Logan Blvd. Stop by and check it out. Huge unused space
under north side of overpass will become next great Chicago Park District
Skatepark and only outdoor skate space "with a roof" = Interstate
Kennedy XWay overpass. Additional highway right of way land on each
side of expressway is also available for greenspace linear trails
along sides of expressway. Some greenspace by overpass can be integrated
with Skatepark. It's a blank canvas waiting for fantastic activity
park to be created that embraces art / design too. It should be open
and skateable 24/7.
To see and walk Skatepark space- it's Logan Blvd (2600N) just west
of Western Ave (2400W). Access underpass space via existing hole in
chain link fence at northwest corner of overpass structure at top
of concrete ramp slope. It's pretty obvious. Some homeless live there
but keep to themselves. Flat space on north side of Logan Blvd under
overpass is more than 1/3 football field!, plus upsloping concrete
ramp and overpass support piers. Imagine lots more lighting and legacy
Skatepark you can help design.
This space is APPROVED for a Chicago Park District Skatepark! Get
the word out.
Mark
Logan Square parks advocate
mobilizing 50-100 Skatepark community users and leaders
out to Kennedy overpass for SCHEDULED media event (daylight hours)
will help start citywide print/TV media awareness Logan Square Skatepark
under Kennedy Expressway deserves.
I'd prefer first media/press event be truely community / skater grassroots;
plus Erma Tranter (Friends of the PArks) and maybe Tim Mitchell representing
PArk District. Concept advocacy for this was community grassroots
and long predates local Alderman Rey Colon. This is part of strategy
I emailed you and Alan Butella on weekend.
