Update November, 2002: MANDATORY HELMET LAW
passed by Board of Aldermen, September 24, 2002

No person while on the premises of the Louisville Extreme Park shall ride, propel or in any manner operate roller skates, in-line roller blades, a skateboard, non-motorized scooter or bicycle unless he or she is wearing a protective helmet at all times when the roller skates, in-line roller blades, skateboard, non-motorized scooter or bicycle is in motion. (in plain english: wear a helmet)

Located in Louisville Kentucky, this park is what all public skate parks should aspire to.

The park is primarily cement with bowls, snake runs, full pipe, flat bars, pyramid/flyboxes, a handrail, hubba ledges, bank to curb, etc. etc. The cement is smooth and fast and the coping on all surfaces is properly installed and grindable. All bowl sections are connected with one or more other sections via snake runs or the fullpipe. The bowl sections also have an smaller bowl to start in that channels down into the deeper sections, giving even beginners the chance to get a moving start even if they wouldn't normally be able to drop in on a larger wall. The full pipe is also a cool touch- not many of those around- that adds a new dimension to the two bowls on either side of it. I found that the inner lower half of the pipe's cement, however, was not as smooth as the rest of the park and did make it a little more difficult to ride.

The street section is basically divided into two separate areas. The first is a ledge configuration that has several steps and manual pads stacked upon one another. Definitely the favorite area for the beginners. The second is a flybox and pyramid section with a roll-in section that has a handrail and hubba-style ledges leading in. Both sections are interestingly laid out and creative. Most importantly- both are highly skateable. There is very little here that is not actually functional.

One of the coolest things, in my opinion, is that the park also has a wooden vert ramp. I don't know of many people that can skate a ramp of this size but it's precisely what's needed if anyone's ever to try. Between the vert ramp and the full pipe this park has some features that make it highly unique. Add to that the fact that the park is public, free, and open for skating 24 hours a day- I can only ask- How did they do it and why can't we?

Go there as soon as you can!
